abstract = "This study aimed to map some permanent preservation areas there
are in the Paraibuna river basin, which is inserted in the Zona da
Mata of Minas Gerais, extending to a small portion of the State of
Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil, in order to overlay this APPs
with current context of use and land cover. The agriculture and
dairy farming are the main economic activities found in the
municipalities of the basin, therefore, it is necessary to
identify which are the possible conflicts in the areas available
for agricultural production if the APP's were deployed as the
Forest Code (Law 4771 / 7.803/1989 and 1965) and CONAMA Resolution
nº303/02. It was possible to extract morphometric data to estimate
the areas of APP from the Digital Elevation Model. It was
performed a supervised classification on Landsat/5 data to obtain
the thematic map of use and land cover, that allowed the
distribution and quantification of main uses in the basin. In a
efficiently way it was possible to generate scenarios that allowed
us to evaluate land aspects of the implementation of APPs in the
Paraibuna river basin, for which the Geographic Information System
got versatile tool for processing and generate geographic data.",
